Salary/Wage: 25 hours per month at $26-28/per hour based on experience

Total Contract: 150 hours

Duration: 6 months (with option to renew)

Organizational Mission 

Honey Pot Performance (HPP) is a creative Afro-feminist non-profit that has evolved from an organic creative collective into a 501c3 organization. Since 2001, HPP has cultivated an approach to performance integrating movement, theater, and first-voice to examine the nuanced ways people negotiate identity, belonging, and difference in their lives and cultural memberships. We create multiform performance projects, participatory public humanities programming, and act as an incubator for the development of new works by artists of color aligned with our commitment to performance, storytelling, and the Black experience in all its diasporic variation. 


Job Description

HPP seeks a Public Relations Manager to join the Marketing & Communications Team. The person in this position will work closely with the Marketing & Communications Directors and Social Media Managers to develop implementable strategies to grow visibility for HPP and the people who contribute to the mission and vision of the organization. The PR Associate will develop and implement a comprehensive public relations program of strategies and objectives to create awareness and visibility of HPP productions and programs, including artistic, education, and community engagement events and initiatives.

A successful candidate will be informed and enthusiastic about the variety of contemporary media and publicity tools, finding innovative ways to share stories and content with journalists, media representatives, and influencers.

Proposed Scope of Duties:

Internal & Marketing Collaboration 

  • Collaborate with Marketing teams to ensure process, strategy, and messaging alignment across all communications touchpoints while maintaining the integrity of the organization’s image and identity.

  • Collaborate with Marketing teams to prepare and edit organizational materials, including public newsletters and other publications for internal and external audiences.

  • Collaborate with managers to identify trends and evaluate advertising to determine whether it is in sync with the organization’s public relation efforts.

  • Support organizational processes and perform additional duties as assigned.

Research & Writing 

  • Draft and distribute compelling pitches and press releases to garner press coverage in local and national press across mediums (digital, print, TV, radio, etc.).

  • Writes press releases and prepares information for the media to promote HPP events

  • Schedules media interviews.

Interpersonal/Relational Management

  • Build and maintain relationships with key press contacts, including journalists and other media influencers, and support institutional media relations strategy.

  • Draft talking points, memos, and other materials as needed to help prepare spokespeople for interviews and for external stakeholders.

  • Monitor and strategize with HPP core when responding to public controversies and critical questions.

External Marketing Communication

  • Coordinate and attend press interviews, including off-sites.

  • Responds to requests for information from the media.

  • Manage relationships with photographers and videographers capturing footage for publicity purposes.

  • Manage and update the media and opening night lists.

Social &  Mass Media Savvy

  • Track press coverage for productions and programs.

  • Track reviews, features, and select pull quotes.

  • Support execution of press nights, special events, rehearsal and production photo calls, and video shoots.

 Qualifications:

  • Experience in arts, performance arts, theater and entertainment 

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills

  • Organized and prepared

  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and to synthesize information in a compelling manner

  • Ability to create strong, productive relationships with a wide variety of people including staff, artists, media, producers

  • Professional adherence to confidentiality and discretion

  • Demonstrated passion for the arts, performance arts, and theater

  • A high level of computer literacy required, including familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite.
